Outside of the forest, Kambo has been the subject of nearly three decades of medical research. Much like snake and scorpion venoms, researchers believe Kambo could open a new world of treatments. Their work focuses on identifying, isolating, and replicating Kambo’s incredible and unique chemical cocktail.
It contains dozens of peptides (short chains of amino acids), some of which are bioactive, meaning they can bind to specific receptors in the human body. These receptors work like locks, and when a bioactive peptide fits into the lock, it triggers specific chemical reactions in the body. This can affect various systems, such as boosting the immune system, increasing energy levels, or promoting the release of certain hormones that can improve mood or reduce pain.
Recent studies have shown that Kambo contains many antimicrobial peptides effective against drug-resistant strains of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, parasites, and viruses.
Here are some examples of the most studied peptides:
Phyllomedusin
A potent peptide that acts on the nervous system, helping to regulate pain and inflammation. Studies have shown that it may be effective in reducing the perception of pain, similar to the way opioids function, without the associated risk of addiction.
Phylloregulins
These peptides have been shown to regulate hormonal balance, particularly in the context of stress and adrenal health. They may also have beneficial effects onregulating metabolism and helping to manage blood sugar levels.
Tachyphyllin
A peptide that has a positive impact on the immune system by boosting the body’s defense mechanisms. It has been studied for its potential to enhance the body’snatural resistance to infections and inflammation.
Cecropins
Cecropins are known for their antimicrobial properties, acting as natural antibiotics. These peptides help combat a range of bacterial and fungal infections, making thema promising candidate for developing new treatments for drug-resistant diseases.
Bufopeptins
These peptides have been identified for their ability to stimulate the release of important cellular growth factors, aiding in tissue repair and regeneration. They may playa crucial role in the healing process, particularly for chronic wounds and injuries.
Kambo is still in the exploration phase by modern science. Researchers worldwide continue to study the biochemical properties of Kambo peptides to understand how these molecules could be used in the treatment of various conditions.
In addition to its physical effects, some research is exploring the psychological and emotional impact of Kambo. Although few studies have been conducted in this field, testimonies suggest that Kambo may have beneficial effects on mood and emotional regulation.
